US might continue negotiations with Azerbaijan on Gabala radar station

The US might continue negotiations with Azerbaijan over the Gabala radar station, Deputy Secretary of State for Political and Military Affairs Andrew Shapiro said in a press conference in Baku. He said the US is currently discussing the missile defense systems with Russia in the framework of NATO partnership, Trend reports.

Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov considers the Gabala radar station of great importance for Azerbaijan. At the same time it plays an important role in ensuring Russia's security. At the G8 Summit in the summer of 2007 Moscow offered Washington to jointly use the Gabala radar station in Azerbaijan, as well as a station meant to prevent rocket launches currently in construction in southern Russia.

A ten-year lease agreement for the use of the Gabala station expires in 2012.
