7,000 police officers to fight militants in Dagestan

About 7,000 police officers in Dagestan will fight militants, RIA
Novosti
cites Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev as saying at
a meeting with police authorities of the North Caucasian Federal
District and Dagestan.

5,497 officers in Dagestan, 150 members of special police forces, 878
military servicemen, including 500 special troops, and 10 crews of
police patrols underwent training.

Nurgaliyev reminded the officers that the National Counter-Terrorism
Committee had decided on July 29, 2010, to establish an
inter-departmental working group in Dagestan, headed by the deputy
chairman of the committee, General-Colonel Vladimir Kuleshov.

Clashes with militants occur frequently in Dagestan. A suspected
militant was killed in Dagestan’s Butnaksky district on Friday. The
suspect opened fire on the police when he was asked to show his ID. No
police officer was injured.

At least 2 bandits were killed in a special operation in Kizlyarsky
district last week. 5 police officers died and 13 were hospitalized.
