The EU supports Russian mediation and the efforts of President Dmitry
Medvedev in settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, High
Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
Catherine Ashton said at a plenary session of the European Parliament
in Strasburg, Trend reports.
Ashton talked about the work of co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group and
sides that want progress in making an agreement. The basic principles
are the first step towards progress and formation of a peace treaty.
The declaration of Presidents Obama, Medvedev and Sarkozy in Deauville
underlines that it is time to reach an agreement.
Ashton says that sides need to double efforts to come to an agreement this year.
Presidents Ilham Aliyev, Dmitry Medvedev and Serzh Sargsyan held a
trilateral summit in Kazan on June 24. They discussed the basic
principles of settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. It is the ninth
meeting of the kind, although with no agreements signed. The
presidents stated progress in the conflict in a joint declaration.
