The Supreme Military Council of Turkey chaired by Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan will make appointments, RIA Novosti reports.
Deputy Commander of the General Staff Nejet Ozel, Defense Minister
Ismet Yildiz and deputy head of the General Staff Aslan Guner will be
at the meeting.
Some military commanders in Turkey resigned after the arrest of
generals and officers on Friday.
The council will last until August 4. Sixteen people are usually
involved, but this time there are eleven.
General Staff head Ishik Koshaner is considered the successor of the
chief of the armed forces. Nejet Ozel was immediately appointed.
About 10% of Turkish generals are in jail.
250 military personnel, 173 of whom are in active service, including
generals and admirals, are awaiting trial.
The Turkish military organized coups in 1960, 1971 and 1980. The
military forced the resignation of Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan in
1990.
