South Ossetia does not plan to become a Russian region, Ambassador to
Moscow Dmitry Medoyev said in an interview with Echo Moskvi.
The statement was made as a comment on Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s comment that the South Ossetian people will decide whether to join Russia or not.
Medoyev does not rule out that Russia and South Ossetia may become
allied states. However, the breakaway republic plans to stay
independent. He noted that most of the population has dual citizenship
with Russia. But there will be no referendums on merging with Russia,
the ambassador concluded.
