Turkmen presidential elections date announced

The Turkmen Parliament set the date for presidential elections for
February 12, 2012, Trend reports.


The decision was made according to article 62 of the Constitution and
article 7 of the Turkmen election law.


Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that the coming
elections should be clear and public.


The Central Commission for Elections and Referendums of Turkmenistan
said that the main goal is to have the elections meet international
standards.


According to the law, a candidate for president needs to be at least
40 years old and no more than 70, speak the state language and have
lived and worked in Turkmenistan for 15 years. The president is
elected for 5 years.
