UN urges Syrian president to stop violence

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to stop violence against civilians immediately, the UN said in a statement, RIA Novosti reports.

The Secretary General expressed "his strong concern and that of the international community at the mounting violence and death toll" in the country, the statement said.

The statement came after some 300 people were killed in a government crackdown on protesters in the past six days, most of the deaths were recorded in the eastern city of Hama.
