Philippe Lefort named new EU representative to South Caucasus

The new special EU representative to the South Caucasus and the
Georgian crisis, Philippe Lefort, was appointed today, Trend reports.


High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the
European Union, Catherine Ashton, introduced Lefort, who will replace
Pier Morel and Peter Semnebi, who had worked in the post from
September 1, 2011, to June 30, 2012.


The representative will establish EU contacts with governments,
parliaments, court systems and the public society. He will promote
states for cooperation against terrorism, drugs and organized crime.


The official will assist peaceful processes according to principles of
the international law, cooperating with the UN, OSCE and the Minsk
Group.


Philippe Lefort is a French diplomat who worked for over 20 years. He
was the French ambassador to Georgia in 2004-2007, deputy ambassador
to Russia in 2007-2010. Lefort became head of theGeneral Directorate
of the Continental Europe at the French Foreign Ministry.
