Police near Tebriz have attacked a group of ethnic Azerbaijanis having
an Iftar (evening meal), Trend reports.
30 were detained, some were injured. Participants of the Iftar planned
a protest over the condition of on Lake Urmia on Saturday.
The police arrested 70 protesters on April 2.
Lake Urmia is located in the Iran's Azerbaijan Province. It is the
second saltiest lake in the world.
Director of the State Directorate for Lake Protection of Iran, Ali
Nazardust, said earlier that Urmia dried by a third as a result of dam
construction, lack of rain and other reasons.
A liter of water from Lake Urmia contains 330 g of salt. Earlier
figures were 160-170 g. The lake covers 5,000 square kilometers.
