The coordinator of the opposition Armenian National Congress, Levon Zurabyan urged the ANC supporters to gather in the central Yerevan for a rally and prepare for “the victorious march” on Friday, News-Armenia reports.
Zurabyan noted that the ANC wanted to avoid turmoil and agreed to negotiate with the authorities for a peaceful transition to constitutional democracy. "But the authorities have stopped halfway. Moreover, once again we have a political prisoner," said Zurabyan.
The Armenian authorities and the opposition held several rounds of talks in order to discuss the situation in the country and settle disputes, but they were interrupted on the initiative of the ANC. The opposition said it was suspending its participation in the talks after one of the ANC congress activists, Tigran Arakelyan, was arrested by the police on August 9 and held in custody.
According to various reports the meeting of the ANC gathered today from 5 to 6 thousand people. Participants of the rally burned a portrait of President Serzh Sargsyan.
