USA to reduce number of generals

The US Department of Defense plans to make 103 generals and admirals redundant by the end of 2014, Vesti reports.

The main reason is financial problems. The Pentagon needs to reduce expenses by $350 billion in 10 years.

The US has reduced the number of servicemen by 30% since the end of the Cold War, while the number of generals and admirals fell by 15%, Ben Freeman, an expert who presented the financial report of the Defense Department to the US Congress, said.

High-ranking officers have about 500 fewer servicemen under their command compared with 1991. Most of the generals will be dismissed from the air forces – 39. The ground forces will part with 31 generals and the marines – 5.

Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said that President Barack Obama planned a reduction of the military budget. There is no need to finance the military in the way it was during the Cold War.
