Russia and Azerbaijan have prospects for cooperation in UN

Russia plans to support Azerbaijan as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. Russian and Azerbaijani experts have given interviews on diplomatic prospects to Vestnik Kavkaza.

Vladimir Yevseyev, Director of the Center for Socio-Political Studies, said that Russia is interested in partnership with Azerbaijan and an alliance with Armenia. Russia hopes that Azerbaijan will not use force to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The conflict may involve Russia and its servicemen at the Gyumri military base.

The expert says that Russia has great interest in ties with Azerbaijan. Russia may use it to lobby its interests or initiatives.

Azerbaijan will most likely start talks on Nagorno-Karabakh as soon as it receives its new UN status.
Fikret Sadykhov, an Azerbaijani political analyst and professor at the Western University in Baku, is confident that Russian support for Azerbaijan is part of bilateral ties.

The new role of Azerbaijan in the UN, should it become a member of the Security Council, would improve its authority, but it is a great responsibility at the same time, Fikhret Sadykhov said.

Concerning new opportunities, Azerbaijan will open up, although Sadykhov noted that it will gain no privileges, just responsibilities for global issues. Azerbaijan must express a vivid position on various issues.
