Armenia may rely on the friendship and support of France, he said. The French president underlined the strategic role of the Caucasus Region for peace and noted that Armenia is at the crossing of Russia, Turkey and Iran. Noting 20 years of Armenian independence, Sarkozy emphasized the significance of success within the context of instability in the region.
All events in Armenia are of importance to France, especially with the large Armenian community living in France. Sarkozy noted that France had offered its hand to Armenia after the Genocide. The two states have good ties. The French president requested his Armenian counterpart to offer Azerbaijan peace initiatives.
Sarkozy noted that he had called for new talks with Turkey. He believes that it is unacceptable to have closed borders in 2011. France would assist in Armenian efforts.
