French President on visit to South Caucasus

Today, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been visiting the countries of the South Caucasus. Sarkozy first visited Yerevan, then Baku, from where he went to Tbilisi.

In Baku, Sarkozy held talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. The participants of the meeting expressed satisfaction with the successful development of bilateral Azerbaijani-French relations in various spheres.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy also met with the First Lady of Azerbaijan, Mehrabin Aliyeva, and handed her the Order of the State of France "Officer of the Legion of Honor."

If Turkey does not recognize the "Armenian genocide" by the end of 2011, France will take appropriate action, the French president said on the eve of his arrival in Yerevan.

The statements of French President Nicolas Sarkozy could negatively impact relations between Turkey and Armenia, which are already experiencing some stagnation, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Ahmet Davutoglu, said today.
