Russia cannot give up on Bashar al-Assad – Vladimir Yevseyev

Syrian Foreign Minister Valid al-Muallem warned the international community against recognition of the National Council, consisting of opposition to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, RBC reports.

The foreign minister was holding a press conference with Bolivian, Venezuelan, Nicaraguan, Cuban and Ecuadorian journalists.

Al-Muallem believes that the EU sanctions against Syria are intended to cause famine in the country. 1,110 law-enforcers have been killed by anti-government forces, financed and supported by the West.

The Syrian diplomatic chief thanked Russia and China for voting against a new resolution of the UN Security Council. Russia recognizes the right of Syria to have no intervention in its internal affairs.

Last week Turkey formed the Syrian National Council to represent the interests of the Syrian Revolution within the country and beyond, opponents of al-Assad said in Istanbul.

Vladimir Yevseyev, Director of the Russian Center for Socio-Political Studies, said that it is a complicated situation for Russia. Moscow cannot give up on Bashar al-Assad. Such a step would complicate the position of Russia in Syria and then the whole Middle East. There are no alternatives. This forces Russia to be an ally of Iran.

Yevseyev believes that there will be no direct confrontation, but tensions continue. Arms trafficking continues supposedly through Iraq, probably financed by Saudi Arabia. Luckily, it has not resulted in clashes between the Alawis and Sunnis. But such a scenario is possible with Kurds involved. The situation is unstable and the fight for Syria will get harder, Yevseyev concludes.
