International operation in Afghanistan to continue in 2012

The UN Security Council extended its authorization of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan for one year, RIA Novosti reports on Wednesday. 

The Security Council called on the international force to continue its work in preparating the Afghan security services in order to train the national police and other Afghan forces.

Some 170,000 people serve in the Afghan National Army and 135,000 people in the national police forces. The process of transferring security to the Afghan Security Forces will be accomplished by the end of 2014.
