United Russia: State Duma to be reformed

The parliamentary campaigning hasn’t reached its pick yet, but plans of reforming the lower Chamber of Russian parliament have already been voiced by the “United Russia” party, that strives to retain the majority of parliamentary seats, Firstnews reports. However, oppositionists and some experts are critical of prospects and efficiency of such measures.

According to the “United Russia’s” official web-site, the party offers citizens to sent them proposals on changes to be introduced to the lower Chamber of Russian parliament, i.e. the State Duma. The party leaders don’t exclude the possibility of cardinal restructuring of Duma after this public discussion. However, it is obvious that if Putin wins presidential elections, Dmitry Medvedev will head the Counsil of Ministers, while being the leading figure in “United Russia’s” election list at the same time, so the restructuring would most likely be aimed at serving the ‘ruling tandem’s’ interests. According to the ruling party’s official representative, the new Duma is to be better prepared to coordinate its actions with State Government.

Oppositionists, in their turn, claim that such a reform isn’t required at all.
