Cyprus scraps military drills, asks Turkey to do same

Cyprus has cancelled military exercises that were to be held next week and requested Turkey to do the same to avoid tensions in the region.


The UN requested the training of Cyprus Nikiforos-2011 to be cancelled. The Cyprian national guards were summoned but they will return home soon, RIA Novosti reports.


The Cyprus Island has been split since 1974 into the Cyprus Republic and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, supported by Ankara. Negotiations to unite the two states have been fruitless.


New tensions between Cyprus and Turkey happened last week as a cause of exploration for hydro carbons in the Mediterranean Sea.
