Election of Azerbaijan as member of UN Security Council demonstrates its authority – Vladimir Yevseyev

Azerbaijan has become a temporary member of the UN Security Council, after the Slovenian Foreign Minister withdrew his state’s candidature.

The spokesman for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, Elman Abdullayev, says that the victory shows the characteristics of the country. It is well-known and has world recognition.

Vestnik Kavkaza interviewed Vladimir Yevseyev, Director of the Russian Center for Socio-Political Studies. The expert noted the significance of the event for Azerbaijan.

Yevseyev believes that the election confirms the international authority of Azerbaijan. The election required international support, which Russia had provided. In order to pass new sanctions against Iran, the West would need to find common grounds with Azerbaijan. This is not beneficial for Azerbaijan. The same position would probably apply to Syria. Azerbaijan would doubtlessly be involved in talks on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and determination of Palestinian membership in the UN, Yevseyev says.

The UN Security Council could be a good platform for Azerbaijan's own initiatives. Its use for a settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is uncertain. It will probably introduce initiatives to break the stalemate.
Azerbaijan will no doubt cooperate with Russia. The two states have a lot in common and continue developing partnership relations. Vladimir Yevseyev concluded by hoping that the election would contribute to further development of Russian-Azerbaijani ties.
