Azerbaijan has passed a bill on ex-presidents and their families in the first reading,1news.az reports.
Former presidents will receive a pension equivalent to 50% of the presidential wage, Ali Guseynli, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Legal Policy and State Construction, said at a plenary session.
In case of a president’s death, the pension passes to his wife or children. Former presidents cannot be prosecuted. Ex-presidents and their families are exempt from paying taxes.
Former presidents and their families will be given means of transport, with drivers and a maximum of three bodyguards. Their spouse gets a lifetime diplomatic passport.
A former president and his wife can only be prosecuted from an order granted by the prosecutor-general.
Some MPs spoke out against using such legislation for ex-President Ayaz Mutallibov.
The law received 110 votes for, 3 against. 1 MP abstained and 1 did not vote. The parliament will have a second reading of the constitutional bill in 6 months.
