Memorial to Beslan victims to be opened in Moscow

On the 1st of June at 14:00 the opening ceremony of a memorial to the
victims of Beslan terrorist attack of 1-3 September 2004 will start,
Rosbalt reports, citing the press-service of the Republic of North
Ossetia (RSO)-Alania of the Russian president.


Head of RSO Taymuraz Mamsurov, Moscow authorities, representatives
from federal agencies, members of the Federal Council, State Duma
deputies, members of the diplomatic corps and a delegation from
‘Mothers of Beslan’ committee are expected to participate in the
ceremony.


The memorial will be set on the square in front of the Church of
Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God in Kulishkakh (Alan) at the
address: Solyanka Str. House 5/2.


On September 1st 2004 at 9.15 a group of terrorists captured 1127
hostages in school No1 in Beslan. 334 people died in the terrorist
attack, including 186 children.


The authorities of North Ossetia – Alania proposed the construction of
the memorial. The idea was approved by the government in Moscow.
The tender was held by the committee of architecture and urban
construction of Moscow in assistance with the department of culture,
the Russian Academy of Arts, the Moscow Union of Artists and the Union
of Moscow Architects with participation of the North Ossetian
representative office of the Russian President. The tender winner was
Zurab Tsereteli


The memorial is a 5 meter tall comet, pointing up. On the base of the
monument can be seen toy, symbolizing the children’s world, kind and
happy. The words inscribed on the base of the monument are: “In the
memory of the victims of the Beslan tragedy, North Ossetia, Beslan,
school No1, 1-3 September 2004. 1127 hostages, 334 dead, including 186
children”.
