Turkey may be interested in Eurasian Union - Togrul Ismail

The Eurasion Union project is widely discussed outside Russia. Togrul Ismail, member of the Ankara Economy and Technology University, says that  the idea is not a new one.

"Attempts to establish a common Eurasian space have already been made by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev. Addressing students of the Moscow State University he first announced such initiative. The talks about the project has continued since then," the expert says.

"Eurasian project in general is popular in Turkey as well as in Azerbaijan. However Vladimir Putin's initiative is a bit different. It reflects the Russian attitude to the situation," Ismail underlines.

"The idea itself is a brilliant one. The project is similar to the European Union. Still there are some problems, and it's not clear how the project will be implemented," he says.

On the possibility of Turkey joining the Eurasian Union, Ismail admits that such possibility exists as the country is becoming an influential regional power and is looking for alternative partners as its EU integration is not successful enough.
