Russia supports Arab League peace initiative for Syria

Russia supports the Arab League initiative to establish peace in Syria, foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told a press conference in Abu Dhabi today, RIA Novosti reports.

The plan envisages withdrawal of Syrian forces' tanks and the start of negotiations between the government and opposition in the first stage.

He noted it was the only way to be sure that the Syrians would be able to decide the future of their own country, and that Russia's position in the UN Security Council remained unchanged.

The UN claims that more than 3000 people have died since unrest broke out in the south of the country in mid-March.
