Greece to be main topic at G20 summit in Cannes

The G20 summit in Cannes will be one of the most tense in history, Interfax reports.


Arkady Dvorkovich, Russian Presidential Advisor, says that the situation in Greece will be the main topic for two sessions of the summit.


Greek Prime Minister Giorgios Papandreou proposed a referendum on the plan to save the state, approved by the EU summit.


The French and German leaders say they are ambitious to realize the plan to save the Greek economy. Nikolas Sarkozy says the referendum needs to be held as fast as possible. Greeks need to determine whether they want to stay in the eurozone or not. The plan for Greece's salvation was passed last Thursday, with 17 votes of the euro zone members.


The US says Europe must solve its euro problems. It has enough resources and the resources of the IMF to solve them, US spokesman Jay Carnie said.


EU leaders held a summit in Brussels last Wednesday. They reached an agreement on stabilizing the eurozone by enforcing it with up to 1 trillion euros. Private investors will write off 50% of the Greek debt and will receive an additional 100 billion euros as credits of the EU and IMF.
