Russia welcomes Azerbaijan into UN Security Council

Russia has welcomed Azerbaijan as member of the UN Security Council, spokesman of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Lukashevich said, Russia-24 reports.


Azerbaijan joined the UN Security Council for the first time. Slovenian Foreign Minister Samuel Sbogar withdrew the state from the voting process in the final round. Azerbaijan received 116 votes, Slovenia - 77. In the final round Azerbaijan received 155 votes for. 24 states abstained, 13 voted for Slovenia. Thus, Slovenia failed to get 129 votes.


Elections for East-European states for UN Security Council membership in 2012-2013 were held at the UN Headquarters in New York City on Monday.


Article 23 of the UN Charter says that the General Assembly elects 10 temporary members of the Security Council, paying special attention to efforts of states in enforcing peace, security and fulfillment of the organization's goals.
