Latvia studies 'illegal arms deal' by Armenia

Latvia says that a deal on arms purchases from Moldova were illegal, Defense Minister of Latvia Janis Sarts said, omg.md reports.


Sarts added that Latspetsexports will probably lose its license to sell arms. It was deceiving Moldova in the deal saying that it had state permit for the deal, it said.


Deal of the Latspetexports was carried out by the authorities of Moldova. 40 out of 60 tons of missile equipment were transported to Armenia via an Il-76. The case was unveiled on September 12. The plane came from Benghazi and landed in Kishinev, then headed to Merkuleshty, where it took up the missiles. The plane reportedly made 2 flights from Moldova to Armenia.


Another contract was in force at the period. A secret deal resulted in transport of some of the most expensive equipment the national army has. This includes complexes 9В862, 9В863 missiles "Cobra", as well as 9В871-3 for anti-missile complexes Konkurs-M. Each was worth $60,000.


Thousands of missiles FAGOT, KONKURS, SHTURM-S, METIS were involved worth a total of $5 million.
The main figures of the case are Valery Lazer, Vice-Premier and Minister for Economy, Defense Minister Vitaly Marinutsa, Deputy Director of the Service for Information and Security Valentine Dedyu and head of the international airport of Merkulesht.
