The Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Araz Azimov and the
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Gennady Gatilov have held talks,
reports Trend with reference to the official website of the department.
In the light of the election of Azerbaijan to the UN Security Council
as a non-permanent member for 2012-2013, the discussion focused on the
activity of the UN Security Council on strengthening security and
stability in the world and the resolution of acute regional conflicts,
primarily in the Middle East and North Africa, the report said.
The parties stressed the importance of the constructive
Russian-Azerbaijani cooperation in the framework of the Council,
taking into account the traditionally friendly relations between
Russia and Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan became the non-permanent member of the Secutiry Council for
the first time.
According to Article 23 of the UN Charter, the General Assembly elects
ten non-permanent Security Council members, paying attention in the
first instance to the country's participation in the maintenance of
international peace and security.
