Russia to reconstruct Qabala radar station

Russia plans to reconstruct the Qabala radar station in Azerbaijan and so reduce rent expenses, Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said on Friday, RIA Novosti reports.

Russia and Azerbaijan will discuss the rental terms to prolong the deal that expires on the 24th of December 2012 until 2025. A radar station will be assembled at Qabala to modernize it.

Azerbaijan has no objections in general, a working commission has been formed. It includes officials of the Russian Defense Ministry, the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry for Industry and Trade.

The Qabala radar station is located in the north-west of Azerbaijan. It was part of the USSR's anti-missile defenses. With Azerbaijan becoming an independent state, the radar became the property of the new state.

Russia has still been using it. A 10-year deal on renting the radar station was signed in 2002.
