Iran has expressed readiness for cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if it balances its position towards Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said on Sunday.
The situation around the Iranian nuclear program worsened after publications of an expert report of the IAEA. There are threats of new sanctions and a military strike against the Islamic Republic. Israel refuses to hold public discussions of an attack on Iran.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak noted that the new report had a "sobering" effect on many states, leaders and the population. He confirmed that Iran wants to acquire nuclear arms, underlining that there is no other explanation to Tehran's actions.
Director of the Center for Political Innovations and Technologies believes that a war against Iran would cause harm to the South Caucasus. Bombing of the Bushehr nuclear power plant would cause a nuclear cloud which may reach Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkmenistan. The land would stay deserted for 100-150 years if such actions take place, he explains.
Moreover, 52% of the Iranian population are ethnic Azerbaijanis. Most of them would have to move to Azerbaijan if a war should start. Despite high economic growth, the situation would harm it. Azerbaijani authorities cannot refuse to aid Azerbaijanis living in Iran.
