Platform for dialogue should be built when sides are ready for dialogue – expert

Vestnik Kavkaza reported earlier that Turkish and French Foreign Ministers Ahmet Davutoglu and Alain Juppe had had a meeting at which the Turkish side confirmed its readiness to establish a commission with Armenia to study the events of 1915. France proposed its mediation in the process. Alain Juppe said that the events of 1915 are a very sensitive issue both for Armenians and Turks.

Armenia has not reacted to the Turkish initiative.

Vladimir Yevseyev, Director of the Russian Center for Socio-Political Studies, told Vestnik Kavkaza that a dialogue platform can only be built when the sides are ready for dialogue. He believes that the joint commission to investigate the events in 1915 should be based on the readiness of sides for rapprochement and their willingness to cooperate. The state of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations when both sides are on the edge of new hostilities doesn't help the problem.

The expert adds that French mediation may guarantee respect for Turkish interests, which Armenia rejects.

Yevseyev concludes that it is indeed a positive step but there are no prospects seen beyond it.
