Russia needs to show benefits of membership in the Eurasian Union in order for Azerbaijan to join it, Rauf Talyshinsky, Editor-in-Chief of the Echo of Moscow, told News Azerbaijan.
Talyshinsky said that Putin’s initiative to form the union will be realized without any doubts. But the question is how long it would last.
The expert noted possible difficulties Azerbaijan may face in joining the Eurasian Union. It is still unclear how Azerbaijan would stay in an economic union with Armenia, which occupies its territories. Another problem is how membership in the Eurasian Union would be maintained with the GUAM and how it will coexist with the aspiraton to join the WTO. Tavyshinsky believes that many points need to be reconsidered.
He concluded that the Eurasian Union has no states with major economic achievements that Azerbaijan would want to follow.
