Armenia's ruling Republican Party has determined the candidates to take the office of parliamentary speaker and vice-speaker, News Armenia reports.
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan proposed Vice-Speaker of Parliament Samvel Nikoyan to become Chairman of Parliament. The decision received unanimous votes.
The speaker's position became vacant on November 14, when Ovik Abramyan officially resigned. He plans to head the Republican Party’s electoral headquarters in the parliamentary polls of 2012. Samvel Nikoyan is the Acting Speaker. MP Gagik Melikyan is the secretary of the faction, Sharmazanov will remain the press secretary of the party.
The Armenian Republican Party has 63 out of 131 seats in the parliament. The party is headed by President Serzh Sargsyan. It holds the position of parliamentary speaker, and head of government, as well as some ministerial portfolios.
