The Armenian Parliament has elected its Acting Chairman Samvel Mikoyan as Speaker, News.am reports.
Larisa Alaverdyan, a member of the Heritage Fraction (opposition) was the other candidate. The parliament may hold an off-schedule session to elect vice-speaker.
106 MPs out of 131 took part in the voting process. Alaverdyan received 4 votes, Nikoyan – 102. The voting results were presented by Chairman of the Counting Commission Gagik Melikyan.
The ruling Republican Party of Armenia decided to introduce Samvel Nikoyan for the position on December 1. Secretary of the Republican Party Eduard Sharmazanov was introduced as candidate for Deputy Speaker. Gagik Melikyan would replace Sharmazanov as the secretary.
