Turkish opposition holds talks in the US

Turkey’s main opposition party’s deputy head said relations with the United States are “warm but shallow” during a visit to Washington, aimed at understanding the US stance on international issues, Hurriyet Daily News reports on Tuesday.

“Turkey and the US seem to be having a ‘honeymoon’ in their relations that is indeed shallow,” Faruk Loğoğlu, deputy head of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), told a press conference following a CHP delegation visit to Washington.

He said if the two countries hold contradictory attitudes towards the Syrian issue then both countries will be puzzled about how to deal with it. Loğoğlu criticized the government for only supporting the Syrian opposition, externalizing the Syrian regime totally.

The Justice and Development Party (AKP) is not successful in ruling Turkey, he said, adding that the CHP’s aim was not to complain to the US about the AKP. “We came to learn how the Americans regard issues like the Arab Spring, Russia, Iran and human rights,” he said.
