Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov nominated as presidential candidate in Turkmenistan

The current Turkmen president Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov, who has been running the country since 2007, was nominated for teh presidency by public organizations on Thursday, Trend reports.

A campaign was launched the day before to nominate presidential candidates in Turkmenistan, where elections are scheduled for the 12th of February 2012. Berdimuhammadov said recently that the 2012 presidential election "will take place on a democratic, alternative basis, and based on principles of democracy, openness and transparency."

Berdimuhammadov stressed that the presidential elections will be monitored by national and foreign observers.
