A prominent journalist has been gunned down in the Russia’s North Caucasus region, the Euronews TV channel reports on Friday.
Gadzhirmurat Kamalov was shot in the Dagestan capital of Makhachkala, outside the office of the newspaper he founded. The Chernovik newspaper was renowned for investigating government corruption.
Kamalov was shot eight times and died on the way to hospital. Staff at the paper have been routinely persecuted for their work.
Presidential Envoy to the North Caucasus Federal District Alexander Khloponin says he will take control of the investigation.
