Umirzak Shukeyev heads Kazakh National Welfare Fund

First Deputy Prime Minister Umirzak Shukeyev  was appointed the head of  the National Welfare Fund Samruk-Kazyna, replacing  Timur Kulibayev.  This was announced today by the Prime Minister Karim Masimov in his Twitter microblog.

He added that Shukeyev continues to lead the government commission on Zhanaozen.

From August 2007 to the present Shukeyev worked as First Deputy Prime Minister.

In-law of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev Timur Kulibayev, who led the National Welfare Fund since April 2011, was dismissed after the riots in the city Zhanaozen  on December 16. Nazarbayev made some personnel changes during a visit to the region.

Shukeyev was born in 1964. He graduated from Moscow Institute of Economics and Statistics and has Ph.D. in Economics.

After graduation he worked as a research assistant  in the Kazakh SSR Gosplan, consultant Supreme Economic Council under President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, deputy head of the department of finance and labor of the presidential administration, Minister of Economy, Minister of Economy and TradeSince, Akim of Astana city.

According to chief editor of Vestnik KAvkaza Alexey Vlasov,  Shukeyev has become a major beneficiary of recent personnel changes. Many experts believed that he is one of the main contenders for prime minister position. However, the resignation of Timur Kulibayev prompted president to change the situation and appoint  one of the most influential politicians to head management of state holdings.

Now only two intrigues remained in Kazakh government - whether Aslan Musin and Karim Masimov will keep their jobs.
