UN Security Council holds first session

The UN Security Council held its first session on Wednesday, attended by Azerbaijan.Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo are the new members of the UN Security Council for 2012-2013, elected at the General Assembly in October 2011. They replaced Bosnia, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria, whose terms of office expired on December 31, 2011, Trend reports.Azerbaijan will discuss the Syrian problem, Aydyn Mirzazade, deputy head of the parliamentary committee for security and defenses, said. He added that Azerbaijan received 155 votes, including the votes of the Arab League. He said they share the same view on Syria.Azerbaijani representative to the UN, Agshin Mekhtiyev, told ITAR-TASS that Baku has a clear image of work in Syria. Any decision must prevent escalation of violence. Azerbaijan supports stop of any confrontation between opposition and the government of Syria.Mekhtiyev said that Azerbaijan recognized Palestine as a UN member and has a Palestinian embassy in Baku. Azerbaijan is a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Non-Alignment Movement.Mekhtiyev added that Baku will insist on the need to fulfill resolutions of the UN Security Council on the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Azerbaijan will actively cooperate with Russia.Baso Sangqu, Chairman of the UN Security Council and South African representative, said that there should be a detailed investigation of violations of human rights in Libya, RIA Novosti reports.The UN Security Council sanctioned military intervention in Libya on March 17, 2011, to protect the population. NATO was permitted to organize air raids against forces of Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi, who had been at power for over 40 years before being killed.The Russian Foreign Ministry published a report on the human rights on December 28, stating that NATO had not prevented violations of human rights in Libya.
