Iran observes a day of mourning on Friday dedicated to the death of
the founder of the Islamic Republic Ruhollah Mousavi Khomeni in 1989,
ITAR-TASS reports. A memorial ceremony will take place at Khomeni's
mausoleum, 40 km away from Tehran. The traditional Friday prayer will
be read in the State University of Tehran by Iranian Ayatollah Ali
Khamenei. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will also make a speech.
Over 5 million people will take part in the mourning ceremonies.
Approximately 50 thousand buses and mini-buses were taking pilgrims to
Tehran.
Ruhollah Mousavi Khomeini died on the 14th Khordad of 1368 according
to the Iranian calendar (June 4 1989) at the age of 87 of a heart
attack. Over 11 million people participated in his funeral on June 6
1989.
