Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has introduced a bill on direct governor elections for parliamentary approval, RIA Novosti reports.
The bill was mentioned in the message for the Federal Assembly. Inhabitants of regions will be able to elect their governors when the bill is passed. The bill was to be presented before February 15.
Medvedev proposed reformation of the political system and switch to elections of region heads in his message in December 2011. Governors will be introduced by ruling parties of the Federal Assembly. A governor’s terms of office take 5 years.
The bill freeing parties from having to collect signatures for parliamentary and presidential polls was introduced on December 23. Independent governors will need to collect the number of signatures set in regional laws.
