The election of Azerbaijan as a temporary member of the UN Security Council demonstrates international recognition of the state, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said on Tuesday, ITAR-TASS reports.
Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo entered office as temporary members of the UN Security Council on January 1. They will continue work in 2012-2013. The states were elected by the General Assembly in October 2011. They replace Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria. Their terms of office ended on December 31, 2011.
The Russian deputy minister noted that there had been special consultations with Azerbaijan. The delegations in New York had regarded cooperation with Azerbaijan as good, constructive and beneficial.
