Iran is modernizing its US tanks M-60A1, Iran News reports.
The Islamic Republic uses its earlier experience of modernizing T-55, Type 69 and T-72M1. They were equipped with the Slovenian system EFCS3-55 of fire control.
M-60 will have dynamic defenses, unlike the one used with T-55 and Type 69. It will probably have anti-tandem properties. T-72M1s may also be equipped with such systems.
The laser detection system LIRD-4A of Slovenia will also be installed. It will allow the crew to know where laser is pointed from. Experts doubt that such systems would make Iranian tanks be rivals to neighbor machines, except Afghanistan’s T-55s and T-62s.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps tested new armored vehicles Sheni-dar and Sarir, Commander of the corps Abdollah Araqi said. They were successfully tested during the Shohaday-e Vahdat military drills.
The commander did not give details on properties of the new vehicles. Sheni-dar uses tracks for movement and is armored against low-caliber weapons and projectiles. It has a periscope. Sarir uses wheels for movement and has machine guns of caliber 14.5 and 7.62 mm. There is no information on the armor of the vehicle.
