Russian opposition leader meets senior clergyman

Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, who was recently imprisoned for taking part in a massive rally right after the December 4 parliamentary elections, today met the head of the Public Relations Committee of the Russian Orthodox Church, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, Ekho Moskvy reports.

The clergyman said they discussed the current political situation in Russia and the opposition's next steps. He also said that he found Navalny "a well-educated and intelligent man, who is going to become an influential politician."

Alexey Navalny was once a member of the liberal Yabloko party, but was expelled due to his nationalistic views. He is a well-known promoter of the "Enough of feeding the Caucasus" slogan.
