Iran hits out at EU sanctions

Iranian Foreign Minister Ramin Mehmanparast said on Monday that the unilateral sanctions against Iran are unjust and destined to fail, Press TV reports.

The official added that the measures would not force Iran to abandon its right for use of nuclear energy for peaceful means.

The minister believes that the sanctions were passed under US pressure and urged the European Union to reconsider its interests. He accused the US of trying to cause harm to economic competitors of the Americans.

Foreign ministers of 27 EU states met in Brussels on January 23 and approved the embargo on Iranian oil exports. The new package of sanctions includes a gradual ban on imports of petroleum from Iran. The embargo will come into full force on July 1. The EU also banned sales of gold, diamonds and precious metals from Iran.
