EU won't intervene in Armenian genocide issue

The EU authorities won't intervene in the Armenian genocide issue.

The law criminalizing denial of the Armenian genocide allegedly committed by Ottoman Turks has recently been passed by the French Parliament. Turkey and Azerbaijan condemned the initiative.

“I think this is not really up to the European Commission to intervene in an issue which involves a member state and a candidate country, and specifically on such an issue," the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefan Füle, told the Euronews TV channel.

"I believe that these kind of important and sensitive issues are best handled by historians, are best handled through dialogue, are best handled in a way putting the facts together, rather than through political declarations,” Füle said.
