Spokeswoman of the US State Department Victoria Nuland said that Iran’s readiness for negotiations is not enough, and that Tehran must prove the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, RIA Novosti reports.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced a readiness for negotiations with Russia, UK, Germany, China, US and France (the six mediators) earlier.
Nuland said that Iran can prove readiness for negotiations by responding to the letter of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, filed in autumn.
Ashton sent a letter on behalf of the six mediators to Secretary of the Supreme Council of National Security of Iran in October. The letter requested Tehran to provide evidence that the nuclear program is of peaceful nature. Ashton said on January 23 that she was expecting a positive reply from Iran.
