The lawmakers were accused of espionage.
A group of Russian politicians and civil activists, including members of the State Duma Ilya Ponomaryov and Oksana Dmitriyeva from the Just Russia Party, as well as a representative of the Communist Party, recently met newly-appointed US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul in order to discuss the current political situation in Russia.
The meeting caused vehement criticism from the ruling United Russia party. The Communist Party rejected the criticism, saying it's common practice to meet with foreign officials.
The pro-Kremlin United Russia party holds the absolute majority of seats in the parliament, which allows the party to put forward any kind of legistation.
