Emergency meeting of Arab League might recognize the opposition National Council of Syria

The League of Arab States (LAS) at a special meeting of the Council might discuss the issue of a complete breaking off of relations with the current Syrian authorities and the official recognition of the opposition National Council of Syria, RIA-Novosti reports, referring to the Egyptian media. The foreign ministers of the Arab League will meet in Cairo on Sunday against a backdrop of growing tensions in Syria and the refusal of the authorities to stop "violence against the civilian population", forcing the members of the Arab League to consider "the termination of any relationship with Damascus and the Syrian national recognition of the opposition Council," informed sources reported at the headquarters of the Arab League.

The discussion will make it clear to the Syrian authorities that the possibility of breaking off of relations actually exists. The headquarters of the Arab League underline the different positions existing between the countries of the League. If the Arab League fails to reach consensus, each country might follow its own policy in relation to the Syrian conflict. If that happens it will become a serious blow to the credibility of the Arab League as a pan-Arab organization.
