CICMA gaining influence in Asia

The Conference on Interaction and Confidence-building Measures in Asia
(CICMA) is gradually transforming into a full-fledged organization for
cooperation and security on the Asian continent, Kazakh President
Nursultan Nazarbayev said, opening the third summit of the heads of
CICMA member-states, ITAR-TASS reports.

He noted that he welcomes Vietnam’s and Iraq’s joining CICMA and
Bangladesh becoming an observer. The forum unites 22 countries,
comprising over 90% of the Asian landmass and half the world’s
population.

Nazarbayev proposed promoting the executive director of CICMA to the
status of Secretary-General. He also spoke up for establishing an
OSCE-CICMA forum, close contacts with the Shanghai Organization of
Cooperation and extending cooperation with Muslim countries, firstly
with the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

Nazarbayev expressed hope that a nuclear-free zone will be created in
the Middle East, believing that problems surrounding the Iranian
nuclear program can only be solved by diplomatic measures.
He noted that they are concerned about the new tensions between China
and South Korea.

Nazarbayev urged the international community to develop a plan of
international aid for Kyrgyzstan, to establish effective power in the
country.
