Azerbaijani and Russian experts organize round-table conference for Year of Russian History in Baku

Trend, an international information agency, has hosted a round-table conference for Azerbaijani and Russian scientists and political analysts to mark the Year of Russian History.

The conference was initiated by the History Department of the Moscow State University, Heydar Aliyev Fund, Vestnik Kavkaza and the North-South Politology Center.

Alexey Vlasov (moderator), Editor-in-Chief of Vestnik Kavkaza and Vice Dean of the History Department of the Moscow State University (MSU), Ismail Agakishiyev, Director General of Vestnik Kavkaza and Associate Professor at the History Department of the MSU, Vladimir Yevseyev, Director of the Center for Socio-Political Studies, represented the Russian sides. Fikret Sadykhov and Ilgar Velizade, political analysts, Gulnara Mamedzade, head of News Azerbaijan, and Alexander Ivanov, head of Interfax-Azerbaijan, represented the Azerbaijani side.

Professor Sergey Karpov, Dean of the History Department of the MSU and corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, greeted participants of the conference in his video message.

The attendants expressed devotion to preserving common historic space by forming new dialogue platforms, developing mechanisms of science and information communications.

Alexey Vlasov reminded that Russia is marking a whole set of historic anniversaries this year.

Gulnara Mamedzade said that many changes happened after the collapse of the USSR, they allowed Azerbaijan and Russia to rebuild their relations. Experts will unite efforts for best co-existence on the common historic space.

Ismail Agakishiyev noted that balanced and impartial reflection of historic facts is essential for understanding the past and search for answers to many questions. Baku has many graduates of the History Department of the MSU, affecting the political life. But Russia still lacks true and full image of peoples of the former USSR living together with Russians for many years. Historians need to organize joint work to give impartial historic facts to the modern generation, he believes.

Fikret Sadykhov says that Russia and Azerbaijan have strategic partnership between their leaders, political elites and ordinary people.

Vladimir Yevseyev agreed and noted that Russia and Azerbaijan have many spheres for cooperation and it is a good basis for development of ties in the future.

Alexey Vlasov noted that the main goal of their meeting is to find the most efficient ways to preserve common historic space Azerbaijan and Russia have.

“We need open and impartial talks on great and tragic events of our common history, together we discuss topics that have been ditched for unprofessionals and political intriguers trying to provoke disputes between friendly peoples of our states. At the same time, we need to avoid labels and tags tabloids like to use, especially when it concerns our common history, such as the Great Patriotic War”, the expert emphasized.
